background
DSM (English D utch S tate M ines , Dutch Nederlandse Staatsmijnen , German Dutch State Mines ) was founded in 1902 as a mining company. Over the years the company has also been active in the chemical sector. In the 1960s, the Dutch government made the decision to close all state-owned coal mines. In 1975 the last state-owned mine was closed. The government subsidized the chemical sites to create jobs for the unemployed miners. In 1989 DSM was privatized. In 2002 the company sold its petroleum division to the Saudi Arabian company SABIC . It also acquired the Nutritional Supplements and Food Additives division from Hoffmann-La Roche . Other manufacturers of dietary supplements were then taken over, such as Martek in 2011, Ocean Nutrition Canada in 2012, Fortitech in 2012 and Tortuga in 2013. Today the company produces industrial chemicals , pharmaceuticals (antibiotics etc.), dietary supplements (vitamins etc.).
