Maria Schmitz (Maria Magdalena Angelica Catharina Schmitz, née Köhler, pseudonyms Angelika Harten and R. Fabri de Fabris , born February 25, 1858 in Neuss , † January 8, 1945 in Kraschnitz ) was a German writer .

Life

When Maria was 12 years old, the father became Dr. Joseph Köhler, a grammar school director and later member of the state parliament, transferred to the Jesuit college in Münstereifel . In 1875 he went to Emmerich . Maria stayed in Münstereifel and attended the boarding school of the Ursulines of St. Salvator there. The author later wrote extensively about this time under the pseudonym Angelika Harten in the Backfischer story “Wildfang im Pensionat” (1897). Maria passed her exams as a teacher at the age of 18 and was first employed at the daughter school in Bochum and later for four years at the St. Leonhard School in Aachen. In 1882 she married the Aachen factory director Joseph Schmitz, with whom she had several children.

The literary historian P. Wilhelm Kreiten SJ encouraged the young woman to write, so that in 1895 her first book “What the flowers tell” was published under the pseudonym R. Fabri de Fabris. Extensive trips through Germany, the Netherlands and the north of France followed. After her husband died in 1897, the widow lived a very withdrawn life and devoted herself entirely to writing in addition to raising her children. Young girls' books, fairy tale books and novels were now published annually under their pseudonyms. The "wild caught volumes" in particular achieved high print runs. In 1922, "The Little Young Boy of Avalon, Story of a Youth" was awarded the Graf Schaffgotsch Prize of the Borromeo Association.

The author is known to have over 40 books. There are also numerous publications of stories and fairy tales in anthologies and magazines of the time, such as "The Grail".
