The Dutch company Aegon NV is one of the world's leading companies in the life insurance sector . The company's headquarters are in The Hague , the Netherlands .

The company name (company) Aegon is formed from the names of the five insurance companies ( acronym ) - Algemeene Friesche (1844), Eerste Nederlandsche (1882), Groot-Noordhollandsche (1845), Olveh (1879) and Nillmij (1859).

At the end of 2004 the company employed over 27,000 people worldwide. Aegon's business areas are focused on life insurance and pensions. The company is also active in health, damage and liability insurance. Aegon is mainly represented on the markets of the USA , the Netherlands and Great Britain, but also in other countries such as Canada, Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan and China. In 1995, Aegon founded the German subsidiary Moneymaxx in Düsseldorf, which was transferred to Deutscher Ring Lebensversicherungs-AG in 2005 . In July 1999, Aegon acquired the US financial services and insurance company Transamerica Corporation .

As a result of the financial crisis that began in 2007 , the Dutch Ministry of Finance announced on October 28, 2008 that it would support the company with a total of three billion euros .

In June 2011, Aegon bought back the last convertible bonds acquired by the Dutch government and was therefore able to repay the state aid granted in full within 2.5 years.

In 2008, Aegon became the official sponsor of the Dutch soccer team Ajax Amsterdam ; the agreement lasts for seven years. Ajax's uniform now features an Aegon logo across the chest. Aegon became Ajax's third sponsor. (TDK sponsored Ajax in the 1980s, and ABN Amro from 1990 to 2008.) As of 2008, Aegon also sponsored the Lawn Tennis Association. Since 2004, Transamerica has been the main sponsor of US golfer Zach Johnson . Aegon also supports the Dutch national rowing team.
