Theo van Boven (1983)

Theo van Boven (born May 16, 1934 ) is a Dutch lawyer and professor emeritus of international law at Maastricht University . Theo van Boven received the Right Livelihood Award (better known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize") in 1985 . He was also the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture from 2001 to 2004 .

Life

Theo van Boven received his doctorate in 1967. Until 1977 he taught human rights at the University of Amsterdam . During this time he represented the Netherlands on the UN Human Rights Commission from 1970 to 1975 . From 1977 to 1985 he was Director of the UN Human Rights Department. During this time he always advocated that human rights should not only be a subordinate policy of the UN, but a guideline at all levels of the UN.

Afterwards van Boven was a professor at the University of Limburg.

From 1995 to 2016 he was a member of the jury for the International Nuremberg Human Rights Award .
