Alkemade ( ) is a former municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands . Since January 1st, 2009 Alkemade belongs together with Jacobswoude to the new municipality of Kaag en Braassem .

The municipality included the places Kaag (which is on an island in the "Kager Plassen", Lage ), Nieuwe Wetering ( Lage ), Oud Ade ( Lage ), Oude Wetering ( Lage ), Rijpwetering ( Lage ) and the main town of Roelofarendsveen ( Lage ). The places are on average 3 meters below sea level.

The towns are located northeast of Leiden on the A4 motorway (European route E 19) towards Amsterdam .

History; famous residents
The villages emerged on bodies of water (weteringen) in the moorland in the 14th century. The former Tour de France winner Joop Zoetemelk was born in Rijpwetering.
