Life

Television career

Walter Konrad, who studied law, came to the newly founded ZDF in 1963 and joined the legal department there. In 1965, when he was only 30 years old, he became deputy legal advisor for the television station. In addition, he was later appointed data protection officer.

In 1982, under the director Dieter Stolte , Konrad switched to the programming department and became head of the main program planning department. In 1987 he became station manager of 3sat , which had only been established three years earlier . In this function, according to Stolte, he succeeded in establishing 3sat "as an outstanding representative of European media culture". So it was hardly surprising that in 1996 he succeeded Heinz Ungureit as the new Director of European Satellite Programs at ZDF. He was thus responsible for the ZDF shares in 3sat and also in arte . In December 1999 he also became head of the new ZDFtheaterkanal .

In February 2000, Konrad resigned from office for reasons of age. His successor as Director of European Satellite Programs was Gottfried Langenstein , who had previously headed the International Affairs Department.
