Gottfried Langenstein

Gottfried Langenstein (born March 15, 1954 in Munich ) is a German broadcast manager.

Life

Gottfried Langenstein grew up in a family with six children on Lake Starnberg . From 1975 to 1983 he studied philosophy , psychology and political science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He completed his doctorate on the morphology of the schizophrenic dream in Paris with research on schizophrenia at the Hôpital Sainte Anne.

Already during his studies Langenstein was active in the fields of media and culture and worked on film projects for the literature department for the Hessischer Rundfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk until 1978 . From 1978 to 1983 he was project manager of the Munich International Theater Festival, responsible for productions in the French and English-speaking regions. From 1986 to 1987 he was the coordinator of the "Science in Berlin" exhibition.

After receiving his graduate scholarship from 1985 to 1986 with his doctorate in 1989, Langenstein began his career at ZDF in 1987 , where he worked until March 2017. Initially, he worked in the International Affairs Department and initiated a series of co-productions with France, Spain and Italy. In addition, he held the functions of head of the General Foreign Relations Department from 1989 to 1994, of the International Affairs Department and the ZDF Festival Commission from 1994 to 2000 and of the broadcaster's online officer from 1998 to 2000.

Langenstein was also a member of the supervisory board of Transtel GmbH from 1996 to 2000 and of ZDF Enterprises GmbH and ZDF Enterprises Media- und Beteiligungs-GmbH from 1997 to 2002.

Langenstein worked from 1998 to 2000 as deputy chairman of the television committee of the European Broadcasting Union ( EBU ), the association of public broadcasters in Europe. In 1989 he represented Germany at the first Assises Européennes de l'Audiovisuel by François Mitterrand in Paris. This congress created the basis for the first European funding program for the audiovisual sector (MEDIA program), which has been running successfully to this day, as well as the EU television directive "Television without Frontiers", which is currently being revised.

From 1995 to 2002 Langenstein was a member of the general assembly of ARTE GEIE in Strasbourg . From 2000 to 2002 he was deputy chairman of the shareholders' meeting of ARTE Deutschland GmbH.

In February 2000 Langenstein became director of European satellite programs (ESP) at ZDF. At the time, the ESP management included the coordination of the partner broadcasters 3sat and ARTE as well as responsibility for ZDF's own special-interest channels ZDFtheaterkanal , ZDFdokukanal and ZDFinfokanal .

In addition, he took over the chairmanship of the management of 3sat and in January 2003 became Vice President of ARTE GEIE. On January 1, 2007, Langenstein replaced his predecessor Jérome Clément as station president. As per the schedule, on January 1, 2011, Véronique Cayla , the French side, took over the management of ARTE and Langenstein was again Vice President until December 31, 2015.

In 2002 Langenstein applied to succeed Dieter Stolte as director of the ZDF, but was defeated by Markus Schächter . In 2006 he was also traded as a candidate for the directorship of WDR.

From May 2011 to September 2015, Langenstein was also director of the digital program ZDFkultur .

In the course of the structural reorganization, the ZDF set up the platform editorial offices that create the programs for all programs for which the ZDF is responsible. Since April 1, 2017, with the completion of a new editorial building, the 3sat editorial offices have also been integrated into it. On the same date, the tasks of the ESP Directorate were transferred to the two program-forming directorates to which the platform editorial offices are assigned. The conversion was planned by a steering committee chaired by Langenstein. His current contract with ZDF ended on March 31, 2017.

Langenstein is a “Personal Supporting Member” of the Max Planck Society , a member of the Supervisory Board of MFG Baden-Württemberg, a member of the Museum Island Berlin Board of Trustees and the Board of Patrons of the Berlin Festival . Langenstein lives in Wiesbaden .
