Castello Caldora

The Castello Caldora , also Castello Cantelmo , is a fortress in the historic center of Pacentro in the Italian province of L'Aquila .

history

At the turn of the 14th to the 15th century, the castle was rebuilt. Some authors believe that the original building dates back to between the 11th and 13th centuries, a time when the capped northeast tower was built.

A reinforcement was carried out in the second half of the 15th century when the Orsinis added large round towers . The construction of the wall ring with a trapezoidal floor plan can also be attributed to this period.

In the 1960s the fortress was restored, but the massive use of reinforced concrete aroused critical comments; Gradually, further restorations restored the fortress to its original appearance.

The towers
Interior

The hill fort has a trapezoidal floor plan. At the corners were square towers, of which only three can be seen today, which are typical of the Abruzzo region in the Peligna Valley . There were only three round bastions . Among the castles of Abruzzo, such as the Castello Piccolomini in Celano , the Forte Spagnolo in L'Aquila, the Castello Piccolomini in Balsorano , the Rocca Calascio , the Castello di Roccascalegna and the Castello Aragonese in Ortona , it is known for the mastery of its execution . The 17th century facade looks out onto the square opposite the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore .

The complex shows a double wall ring ; the inner one is older and the outer one dates from the time of the Cantelmos . There are numerous coats of arms near the entrance and on the towers. The most legible is that of the Orsinis. The decorations are reminiscent of the Renaissance , similar to the cornice on the Campanile of Santa Maria Maggiore , with the exception of the pointed arched doors . The medieval towers are:

  • Torre del Re (Eng .: King's Tower) in the northwest, behind the drawbridge , height 25 meters. It's five-sided
  • Torre Fantasma (English: ghost tower) in the northeast, so named after the legend of Baron Roberto de Luczinardo , who had the portrait of his wife Margherita painted after she threw herself from the tower because of the false news of her husband's death. The tower dates from the 14th century, height 27 meters.
  • Torre d'Assedio (Eng .: siege tower) in the southeast; he is the oldest, height 12 meters. The upper part of the tower broke off when it was damaged in the attack of Frederick II's troops in 1230 .
