Castel Camponeschi

Castel Camponeschi is a fortified settlement on the Prata d'Ansidonia plain in the province of L'Aquila in Italy .

history

The settlement emerged around the 13th century (and was later rebuilt in the 15th century) and was the original Castrum of Prata. It was first mentioned in 1508 as Castrum S. Petri Camponeschi in 1508. Tradition has it that the settlement was built at the same time as the Church of San Paolo di Peltuinum and that the fiefdom subsequently passed into the hands of the Camponeschi family from L'Aquila . After that, the castle passed through several hands during the Spanish period and was then a fiefdom of the Nardis family from 1634 to 1806 . It was inhabited until 1963, when the last family moved to Prata. Urgent restoration work was carried out from 2003 to 2008. Unfortunately, this restoration was only completed in half of the settlement as it was interrupted by the 2009 earthquake.

description

The complex consists of a rectangular wall ring with remains of towers, connected with residential houses and palaces. The two medieval access gates in the Cardo and in the Decumanus are perfectly preserved. Next to the west gate there is also a large tower, broken off in the middle, and a church of St. Peter , which is now desecrated.

Castel Camponeschi corresponds to the Tuscan model of Monteriggioni , in which the houses are completely without connection to the wall ring. Traces of six towers with a square floor plan, which were distributed around the wall, remained on the walls.

Peterskirche

Its style is medieval: the facade is flat and has two portals and two small rosettes. The interior is divided into two naves, and the bell tower is contained in one of the towers.

West entrance gate

The gate is perfectly preserved and has classic arches.

Noble palaces

The interior of the settlement consists of small farmhouses, each with only one room, and two more complex residential houses, the aristocratic palaces. They are medieval and made of stone in a style typical of the 15th century.

Interior of the settlement

The houses inside the settlement are much simpler, made of stone and connected by arches.

In June and July 1980 the village was cleaned up and repaired, electrical connections were installed and from July 16 to 20, 1980 the Hobbit Camp 3 took place there. It was partially inhabited and bookstores and restaurants popped up. Outside the walls, a camp was organized for all participants who could not fit into the residential buildings, and a large stage was set up for concerts and discussions.
