Rocca Calascio

The Rocca Calascio is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the Italian municipality of Calascio in the province of L'Aquila . It rises inside the Abruzzo and the m with 1.460 highest, about 1,000 year-old castle of the Apennines .

The complex was later expanded into a small but strong fortress that was never besieged . A watchtower is said to have been built here as early as the 10th century .

In the years 1461 and 1703 the facility was badly damaged in very severe earthquakes. While the town of Calascio , which lies below the fortress, was rebuilt, this did not happen with the fortress. Rocca Calascio was the filming location for the final scene of the film The Day of the Falcon by Richard Donner .
