Nimbin

Nimbin is a small town with around 453 inhabitants in northern New South Wales , about 780 km north of Sydney in Australia .

etymology

The place name Nimbin was derived from "Nyimbunje", the name of one of the Aboriginal elders of the Bundjalung tribe, who are said to have magical powers. Even today, his tomb at the Nimbin Rocks, with three prominent rocks in the area ("Cathedral", "Needle" and "Thimble"), is visited for male initiation rites.

geography

Nimbin is part of the local administrative area of Lismore City , and is a popular day trip destination from Byron Bay because of its landscape , and is also called the Rainbow Region . Nimbin is the best starting point to visit three different national parks in less than an hour's drive: Nightcap National Park , Northern Ranges National Park and Mount Warning National Park . The area is of spiritual importance in Aboriginal culture .

history

Nimbin was a sleepy village that held a hippie festival, the Aquarius Festival, until 1973 . At that time, four festival-goers were arrested by the police. In a joint peaceful protest, the party went to the police station and demanded their release. The police then capitulated, released the detainees and also approved the use of marijuana. Many of the festival-goers at that time remained resident. Up to 20,000 visitors come to the annual festival, the “MardiGrass” (an ironic modification of “ Mardi Gras ”). The area around "Mount Nardi" is now a World Heritage Site due to the efforts of the Nimbie hippies .

Cannabis culture is openly maintained in the city , although it is illegal to use and cultivate it in New South Wales. There are various shops and a hippie museum.
