Hans-Peter Naumann

Hans-Peter Naumann (born January 18, 1939 in Chemnitz ; † May 12, 2020 ) was a German Germanic and Scandinavian medievalist , linguist and runologist . He was Professor of Nordic Philology at the German Department of the University of Zurich .

Career

From 1958 Naumann studied German, Scandinavian and history in Freiburg . From 1965 he was a research assistant at the German seminar at Saarland University . In 1968 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with the dissertation “Goethe's Faust in Swedish Translation”. This was followed by an assistant position at the Nordic Department of the German Department of the University of Zurich, which he also held from 1968 to 1969 at the German Department in Basel . In 1976 he completed his habilitation in Zurich with the thesis “Sprachstil und Textkonstitution. Investigations into the Old-West Norse legal language ”with the granting of the Venia legendi for Germanic, especially Nordic philology.

Since Naumann accepted a position as a research assistant (lecturer for Nordic Philology) at the Institute for Nordic Philology and Germanic Classical Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1977 to 1979 , she received a rehabilitation . In the winter semester 1979/80 he followed the call to Zurich for a newly created extraordinary professorship for Nordic philology, in the winter semester 1988/89 he was promoted to full professorial position. In 2004 he retired.

Naumann taught and researched beyond the narrower area of ​​Old Norse languages ​​and literature, especially on the medieval linguistic, literary and cultural interferences between Germanic Scandinavia and the West Germanic entities of the continent of Alemannia and Old Low German . In addition, runology and Germanic antiquity were part of his scientific focus. As a specialist advisor and co-editor, Naumann had written numerous articles for the 2nd edition of the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde .
