The basic tax union (SBG) was founded on January 9, 2005 as an independent, umbrella association-free "trade union" for employees in the tax administration in the state of Lower Saxony and the other division of the finance ministry in the state of Lower Saxony. It emerged from non-union lists in the 2004 staff council elections at the tax offices in Hameln and Osnabrück -Land.

The SBG advocates: a right to strike for Lower Saxony tax officials, fair participation in general economic development, the prevention of further extensions of working hours and further personnel savings, a reduction in workload by increasing the number of candidates and new hires, generally recognized vocational training for the second entry-level office of the first Career group, a timely promotion to the higher-ranking post comparable to the regulation for employees and a fairer appraisal and promotion system.
