Martin John Evans (2007)

Sir Martin John Evans (born January 1, 1941 in Stroud ) is a British geneticist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2007. He was awarded together with Oliver Smithies and Mario Capecchi for research on the knockout mouse . Evans is a pioneer in mouse embryonic stem cell research , an essential tool for creating knockout mice.

Life

Evans graduated in 1963 at Christ's College of Cambridge University . In 1969 he received his PhD from University College London . From 1969 to 1978 he worked at the Department of Anatomy and Embryology at University College London, teaching students. From 1978 he was in the Department of Genetics at Cambridge University. He has been a professor at Cardiff University since 1999 .
