The Kilpisjärvi [ Kilpisjärvi ] ( North Sami Gilbbesjávri ) is a lake in Lapland at the border between Finland and Sweden . It is located in the northwest of the Finnish municipality of Enontekiö and in the north of the Swedish municipality of Kiruna not far from the Finnish-Swedish- Norwegian border triangle . The village of the same name Kilpisjärvi is located on the Finnish bank . The river Könkämäneno , a tributary of the Muonio älv (Muonionjoki) rises from the Kilpisjärvi.
Kilpisjärvi lies at an altitude of 472.8 m above sea level in the foothills of the Scandinavian Mountains and is surrounded by fells like the Saana on the east bank. The Salmivaara hill protrudes into the Kilpisjärvi and divides the elongated lake into two parts connected by a narrow sound : the actual Kilpisjärvi or Ylinen Kilpisjärvi ( North Sami Bajit Gilbbesjávri ) in the north and the Alajärvi ( Vuolit Gilbbesjávri ) in the south. Taken together, the area of the lake is 37.33 km². The maximum depth of Kilpisjärvi is 57 m in Alajärvi and 47 m in Ylinen Kilpisjärvi. On average, the lake is 19.5 meters deep. Because of the harsh climate, Kilpisjärvi is iced over most of the year: On average over many years, it freezes over completely on November 7th. The banks do not thaw until the end of May, until the ice has completely melted, it takes on average until June 19.
