Finnøy was an island municipality in Boknafjord in Norwegian Fylke Rogaland . The commune was in the heart of the Ryfylke countryside . The administrative center was Judaberg. Finnøy is also the name of one of the 15 islands that belonged to the municipality. As part of the municipal reform in Norway , Finnøy and Rennesøy were merged with Stavanger on January 1, 2020 .

Seven of the 15 islands make up the Sjernarøyane archipelago . 3150 inhabitants lived on a municipal area of ​​104.3 km² (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality number was 1141.

The municipality bordered Tysvær and Suldal municipalities in the north, Hjelmeland in the east, Strand and Rennesøy in the south and Bokn municipality in the west .

Economy and Transport

A car tunnel to the island of Rennesøy and the island of Talgje has been in operation since autumn 2009. Since then, the oil metropolis of Stavanger can be reached by car from the north via bridges and tunnel connections without a ferry.

The main industries were agriculture, fishing and tourism.

Various interesting archaeological finds have been made in the commune. The oldest find is a polar bear bone, which was dated back 10,600 years. The oldest place to live is on Bjergøy ​​Island and is dated around 5–6,000 years ago.

Of the nine medieval churches in Fylke Rogaland, two were in Finnøy municipality on the island of Finnøy: Talgje kirke from approx. 1140 and Hesby kirke from approx. 1200. There is also the renaissance church Sjernarøy kirke from 1637 on the island of Kyrkjøy .
