Ray W. Clough

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ray William Clough (born July 23, 1920 in Seattle - † October 8, 2016 ) was a professor emeritus of structural engineering in the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and one of the founders of the finite element method (FEM). His publication in 1956 (see below) marked the first application of this calculation method and in 1960 he first used the term finite elements .

Life

Clough studied at the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in 1942, at Caltech with a master's degree in 1943 and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a master's degree in 1947 and his doctorate in 1949. He then became an assistant professor and later professor at Berkeley. From 1983 he was a Nishkian Professor at Berkeley.

1956/57 (and 1972/73) he was a Fulbright Fellow in Norway, where he dealt with ship vibrations, and in 1963/64 at Churchill College, Cambridge University .

He was considered an authority on earthquake security of structures.

Clough and Wilson vividly described the history of FEM in the early days from 1952 to 1970 in "Early Finite Element Research at Berkeley".
