Jan D. Achenbach
January Drewes Achenbach (* 20th August 1935 in Leeuwarden , † 22. August 2020 ) was a Dutch - American engineering scientists . He was a professor at Northwestern University in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering.
Life
Achenbach studied aeronautics at the TU Delft with a diploma in 1959. He then went to the USA, where he received his doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University in 1962 . As a post-doctoral student he was at Columbia University (as a preceptor ) and then went to Northwestern University as an assistant professor of civil engineering in 1963. In 1966 he became Associate Professor, 1969 Professor, 1981 Walter P. Murphy Professor (of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics) and 1992 Distinguished McCormick School Professor . From 1985 to 2001 he was director of the Center for Quality Engineering and Failure Prevention at the university.
In 1969 he was visiting professor at the University of California, San Diego (in La Jolla) and in 1970/71 at TH Delft. Since 1981 he has been a consulting professor at the Huazhong Institute of Science and Technology.
He dealt theoretically with waves in elastic media, with sound propagation in solids and experimentally e.g. B. with methods for the detection of cracks and defects (corrosion) with ultrasound. This led to significant advances in the safety of aircraft, but also of bridges, reactors and other safety-critical structures. He was the founding editor of Wave Motion magazine .
