After taking part in expeditions to Mount Everest in 1996 and 2001 , he became the first Hungarian citizen to reach the summit. Previously, Zoltán Demján , a mountaineer from Hungary, had already climbed Mount Everest, although he was a Czechoslovak citizen.

In 2010 Erőss had an accident in the Tatra Mountains , as a result of which his right leg had to be amputated below the knee . He then received a prosthesis , but was able to continue climbing anyway. In 2011 he climbed the Lhotse and on May 20, 2013, together with his partner Péter Kiss, the Kangchenjunga . Both climbers were killed on the descent to the base camp at an altitude of 7600 meters.
