Ronald Breslow (2006)

Ronald Charles David Breslow (born March 14, 1931 in Rahway , New Jersey - † October 25, 2017 in New York City , New York ) was an American chemist .

Life

Breslow studied chemistry at Harvard University ( Bachelor in 1952, Master 1954), where he in 1955 Robert Burns Woodward with the theme Studies on magnamycin doctorate was. As a post-doctoral student he was at Cambridge University in 1955 with Alexander Robertus Todd . From 1956 he was, initially as an instructor, at Columbia University , where he stayed for the rest of his career. There he was Samuel Latham Mitchill Professor of Chemistry , had the rank of University Professor and was Dean of the Department of Chemistry.

One of his PhD students was the Nobel Prize winner Robert Grubbs .

His wife, Esther Breslow, was a professor of biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medical College. With her he had two daughters.

plant

Breslow became known for the synthesis of new unusual molecules, for example the cyclopropenyl cation , the simplest aromatic system . He established the term anti-aromatics and also researched the mechanism of action of vitamin B1 . Later he dealt with the synthesis and mode of action of artificial enzymes or of molecules that simulate the action of enzymes (he was one of the founders of biomimetic chemistry), with applications for example in new possible cancer drugs. He also did early work on CH activation .

Honors

In 1996 he was President of the American Chemical Society and from 1974 to 1977 he served on the Chemistry Department of the National Academy of Sciences . The American Chemical Society annually awards the Ronald Breslow Award for Achievement in Biomimetic Chemistry in his honor.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Philosophical Society , the European Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He was an honorary member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and an external member of the Royal Society . He was an honorary member of the Korean and Japanese Chemical Societies and a member of the Indian National Science Academy.
