John Prausnitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Michael Prausnitz (born January 7, 1928 in Berlin ) is a professor of chemical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley . He had a decisive influence on the development of many g E models for the description of activity coefficients , which play a major role in the modeling of phase equilibria.

Life

John Prausnitz was born in Berlin in 1928, but immigrated to the United States in 1937 at the age of nine . In 1950 he received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University . In 1951 he received his masters degree from the University of Rochester . He received his doctorate from Princeton University in the group of RH Wilhelm. In 1955 he came to the University of California, Berkeley. His main focus was on chemical thermodynamics, especially phase equilibria, and the physical properties of substances. In 1973 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1988 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2004 he retired, but continued to work regularly at the university.
