Solomon W. Golomb

Solomon Wolf Golomb (born May 30, 1932 in Baltimore , Maryland , † May 1, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American mathematician and engineer . In entertainment mathematics, he became popular as the discoverer of the polyominos . Golomb also invented a variant of chess checkers . He became known to the wider public through the Golomb rulers named after him .

Golomb was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Southern California . He specialized in problems of combinatorial analysis ( Golomb-Dickman constant ) as well as number theory ( Golomb sequence ) and coding ( Golomb code ).

In 2003, Golomb was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences . For 2011 he was awarded the National Medal of Science and for 2016 the Benjamin Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute . He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
