Peter Dervan
Peter B. Dervan (born June 28, 1945 in Boston ) is an American chemist who deals with bio-organic chemistry.
biography
Dervan studied at Boston College (Bachelor in 1967) and received his PhD in organic physical chemistry from Yale University in 1972 with Jerome A. Berson . As a post-doctoral student, he was a Fellow of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at Stanford University . He has been Professor at Caltech since 1973 ( Bren Professor of Chemistry ).
Dervan is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1988), the American Philosophical Society (2002), an external member of the Académie des sciences and a member of the Leopoldina since 2004 . In 2017 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
He is married to chemistry professor Jacqueline K. Barton .
plant
Dervan developed novel synthetic molecules that are comparable in their affinity and specificity to any given DNA sequence in naturally occurring proteins. He opened up a completely new field of bio-organic chemistry. It also enables novel drugs to combat cancer and other diseases caused by abnormal gene expression by synthesizing small molecules that enter the cell and bind to predetermined DNA sites.
