Earl R. Stadtman

Earl Reece Stadtman (born November 15, 1919 in Carrizozo , New Mexico , † January 7, 2008 in Derwood ) was an American biochemist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he had been since 1950.

Stadtman grew up in San Bernardino . He studied at the University of California, Berkeley , where he made his bachelor's degree in 1942 and received his doctorate in biochemistry in 1949 (after work in mapping in Alaska during the war). Wanting to work with his wife, who was doing her PhD in biochemistry at Berkeley at the same time, he turned down offers from universities and went to the NIH in 1950, where both could work together.

Stadtman researched the fatty acid metabolism and highlighted the importance of acetyl-CoA .

Stadtman discovered the connection between aging processes and the effects of free radicals via protein oxidation and the substances formed in the process ( carbonyl proteins ).

He also taught and worked with numerous post-graduate students at his laboratory, including 10 later members of the National Academy of Sciences and two later Nobel Prize winners (such as Michael S. Brown ).

In 1953, Stadtman received the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry , in 1969 he was accepted into the National Academy of Sciences and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1970 he was honored with its Selman A. Waksman Award in Microbiology . In 1979 he received the National Medal of Science and in 1991 the Welch Award in Chemistry . Since 1996 he has been a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

His wife, Thressa Campbell Stadtman, was also a biochemist at the NIH (since 1950), with whom he worked closely. They met while studying at Berkeley and married in 1943.
