In the 2017 parliamentary elections , she achieved 0.95% of the vote and after a long time she can again send a representative to the Kuvendi i Shqipërisë , the Albanian parliament.

history

The Partia Socialdemokrate was founded in March 1991, shortly after the communist dictatorship in Albania was overthrown at the turn of the year 1990/91 and the one-party system was abolished. In April 1991 the trained mathematician Skënder Gjinushi was elected to the party chairmanship. Gjinushi was not an unknown politician in Albania at the time; between 1987 and 1991 he had headed the Ministry of Education under Prime Minister Ramiz Alia , the last communist dictator in Albania.

In the first democratic and free parliamentary elections in Albania in 1992, the PSD won seven out of 140 parliamentary seats. In the next elections in 1996 she did not take part, while a year later she was able to take nine of the 155 seats in parliament after the lottery uprising .

In the following elections to the Albanian parliament, the PSD could no longer cling to its initial success. The 2005 elections are an exception, when the PSD received seven out of 140 seats. Throughout its existence, the Partia Socialdemokrat has worked closely with the Socialist Party and has formed coalitions with it . In the parliamentary elections in 2009 , the PSD won 1.76% of the vote. However, the result was not enough for a seat in parliament. In the parliamentary elections in 2013 it only achieved 0.59% of the vote and again no parliamentary seat. Be the elections of 2017 was able to win a seat the party.

When Skënder Gjinushi was to become chairman of the Albanian Academy of Sciences in 2019 , he handed over the party chairmanship to Ëngjëll Bejtaj.
