Dien van Straalen
Dien van Straalen (born 1947 in Zoetermeer , Netherlands ; died in July 2010 in The Hague , Netherlands) was a Dutch costume designer .
Van Straalen often worked on Peter Greenaway films . She also collaborated with production designer Ben van Os .
In 2004 she received an Oscar nomination for her work on The Girl with a Pearl Earring for Best Costume Design . She said: “The nomination came as a complete surprise. The Girl with the Pearl Earring isn't exactly a big production. It's a small, intimate film, relatively low-budget. Most of the fabrics I used for the costumes come from second-hand stores. I found beautiful Indian silk in England, but also in the Netherlands. Yes, I even used fabrics from the Albert Cuyp market in Amsterdam . "
In the same year she was nominated for a British Academy Film Award in the category Best Costumes for the same film .
