Luuk Kroon (born December 13, 1942 in Ridderkerk , Province of South Holland ; † June 19, 2012 in The Hague ) was a Dutch lieutenant admiral who, among other things, was commander in chief of the Royal Navy ( Koninklijke Marine ) and as chief of the defense staff ( chief defensiestaf ) commander in chief the armed forces was.

Life

After attending school, Kroon completed training as a naval officer and was promoted to Vice Admiral in September 1995 and at the same time appointed as the successor to Nico Buis as Commander of the Royal Navy. He held this position until he was replaced by Vice Admiral Cees van Duyvendijk in June 1998.

He was then promoted to Admiralty Lieutenant in June 1998 and succeeded General Henk van den Breemen as Chief of Defense Staff. He was Commander in Chief of the Dutch Armed Forces until he was replaced by General Dick Berlijn in June 2004.

During his six-year term of office there were numerous international military deployments, for example in Ethiopia , Afghanistan , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Eritrea , Iraq , Kosovo , Liberia and Macedonia . Because of his services to military cooperation with the German Bundeswehr , he was awarded the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in gold .

After his retirement he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau in June 2004 and was also appointed Adjutant in the extraordinary service of Queen Beatrix .
