The Zuidplaspolder is a polder in the Dutch province of South Holland , between Rotterdam -Nesselande, Zevenhuizen , Moerkapelle , Waddinxveen , Gouda , Moordrecht and Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel . This polder, which gave the municipality of Zuidplas its name, is the lowest point in the Netherlands (and possibly the whole of the European Union) at 6.76 meters below the Amsterdam level .

history

Due to the intensive peat mining , a large lake, the Zuidplas, existed on the site of today's polder until the 19th century . In order to gain additional arable land, the government of King Wilhelm I made the decision in 1816 to drain the lake. In the following years a spatial floor plan was drawn up. On the basis of a line between the church towers of Moerkapelle and Moordrecht, the area was divided into a grid of blocks of around 800 × 800 meters, which were separated from each other by ditches ( "daughters" ). In 1825 the actual drainage work began. With the help of 30 windmills, the polder was emptied into a ring channel. In 1840 the work was finished. Forty years later, steam mills (which were first used in the Zuidplaspolder) took over the task of regulating the water level. Today this is done by electric pumping stations . The original grid can still be seen in some places on the polder.

There are more recent plans to develop the polder into a residential and commercial area.
