Pieter Broertjes

Pieter Broertjes (born September 20, 1952 in The Hague ) is a Dutch journalist . From 1995 to 2010 he was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper de Volkskrant . Since July 1, 2011 he has been mayor of Hilversum as a member of the PvdA .

Life

Broertjes studied social sciences at the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht . In 1979 he became editor at de Volkskrant in the “Economic and Social Affairs” department, and in 1987 he took over the department management. In 1991 Broertjes became deputy editor-in-chief under Harry Lockefeer , whom he inherited on March 1, 1995 after he moved to the board of directors.

A year after he took up his position as editor-in-chief, de Volkskrant had reached its peak circulation of almost 370,000 copies, and for 25 years it had been the third largest daily newspaper in the Netherlands behind De Telegraaf and Algemeen Dagblad . Under his aegis the expansion of the newspaper to the Internet (1996) and the introduction of a magazine for the Saturday edition (1999) fall. Like many other newspapers inside and outside the Netherlands, Broertjes has been confronted with falling circulation figures since the establishment of the Internet as a mass medium, and there has also been a Dutch branch of the free newspaper Metro since 1999 . This makes him the first editor-in-chief of de Volkskrant to deal with permanent circulation losses.

From 1998-2006 Broertjes was chairman of the Nederlands Genootschap van Hoofdredacteuren (Dutch Society of Editors-in-Chief). During this time he was critical of the Raad voor de Journalistiek (Dutch equivalent to the German Press Council ) and recommended its dissolution, but could not get his way with his opinion.

After 15 years as editor-in-chief, Pieter Broertjes left the newspaper on July 1, 2010. Philippe Remarque has been appointed as his successor.

On July 1, 2011, Pieter Broertjes succeeded Ernst Bakker as mayor of Hilversum.

On November 2, 2013, Broertjes was appointed chairman of the supervisory board of the consumer association Consumentenbond .

On July 23, 2014, Broertjes made global headlines with a comment in a radio discussion about the flight disaster on flight MH17 . When it came to the question of sanctions against Russia, he said ironically that one could “ throw out Putin's daughter”, who lives in the Netherlands. He later tweeted that the remark was thoughtless and "arose from a feeling of powerlessness that many people currently have."
