Jeff Denson

Jeff Denson (born December 20, 1976 in Arlington , Virginia ) is an American musician ( double bass , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Denson first learned alto saxophone and played in funk bands before switching to the electric bass . Under the impression of Charles Mingus , he began to study the double bass in detail. He first studied fine arts at Virginia Commonwealth University before studying music at Northern Virginia Community College in 1997. Between 1999 and 2002 he completed his studies at Berklee College of Music , where he met Florian Weber and Ziv Ravitz , with whom he formed the Trio Minsarah in 2001 . With this group he toured Europe and recorded several albums. With Minsarah he went on tour with Lee Konitz since 2007 and recorded three albums (first Deep Lee , 2008). He moved to New York City in 2010 after receiving his PhD from the University of California, San Diego , where he also took classes with Anthony Davis and Mark Dresser .

Denson's debut album Secret World , which he also presented in Europe, was named the best jazz album of 2013 in Japan. Denson is also on the road with his trio, with whom he also appeared with Konitz (also documented on album in 2015). He also played with Joe Lovano , Jane Ira Bloom , Kenny Werner , Dave Douglas , Bob Moses , Giacomo Gates and Howard Alden . He is a professor at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley .
