The Wolfe Tones are an Irish band deeply rooted in traditional Irish music . It belongs to the subgenre of Irish Rebel Music .

history

The group is named after the Irish rebel and patriot Theobald Wolfe Tone , one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 . In addition, wolf tone is used in English to denote an annoying noise that occurs particularly on string instruments.

The Wolfe Tones started their careers in the early 1960s and continue to perform and record to this day. They originally consisted of the brothers Derek and Brian Warfield and their boyfriend Noel Nagle. Tommy Byrne joined the group shortly thereafter.

Her fearless advocacy of the Irish Republican movement led to controversy surrounding her, which is why her music was not allowed to be played on the radio in the Republic of Ireland until the 1980s . More recently, their music was banned from Aer Lingus flights after Northern Irish politician for the conservative Ulster Unionist Party Roy Beggs Jr. compared their songs to speeches by Osama bin Laden .

In 2002 Derek Warfield left the group to embark on a solo career. He later founded the "Young Wolfetones", which are very successful. The remaining musicians continued to tour continuously until 2004, mostly performing in small halls. According to their website, they only appeared on selected occasions in 2007. During the "Irish Summer Tour 2009" they played regularly in Ireland and gave a concert in Switzerland.

In August 2019, the band headlined the West Belfast "Féile an Phobail" festival in the sold out Falls Park in front of over 12,000 spectators.
