The Tønder Festival is a place held annually Folk - and Roots music festival in Tønder in Denmark . It is the largest festival of its kind in Europe and one of the largest folk festivals in the world.

procedure

The music festival takes place every last weekend in August from Thursday to Sunday. A total of almost 30 concerts are given at several venues on the site, which have between 180 and 2700 seats. Since 2012, individual concert tickets have no longer been sold, but rather day, weekend or week tickets for the entire festival site and all the concerts taking place there. The ticket is worn as a colored bracelet. On average, well over 20,000 tapes are sold. The largest stages are in two tents on the festival square southwest of the city center. In addition, an open-air area with a large stage is used south of the actual festival site. “Bourbon Street” has existed for just as long, a self-contained area with the so-called mirror tent in the center. From the inside, it looks like a club in New Orleans due to the many wood, mirror and Art Deco elements . All kinds of concerts are held here. The venues in the city (auditorium, town hall, etc.) have been given up, but there are also free groups playing in the pedestrian zone or in pubs and cafes. In addition to well-known greats in the folk scene, especially from Ireland, the United Kingdom, North America and Scandinavia, there are also lesser-known artists. Workshops and master classes are also offered for them.

Around 150 leading and around 2,000 other helpers each work on a voluntary basis for the festival. The festival is mainly attended by Danes and Germans.

The festival is organized by the Tønder Festival Fond and the Tønder Festival Forening (Tønder Festival Association). The Tønder Festival Fond operates the subsidiary Millstrema Records , which mainly sells folk and roots music on the Internet. Tønder Festivalens Venner ApS (Friends of Tønder Festival) runs Hagge's Musik Pub in Tønder, where folk and roots music concerts take place all year round.

history

In June and September 1974 it was students from the then Tønder College of Education who organized three-day, small festivals. The following year the first Tønder Festival took place in a small former mill. This Visemølln is still the venue for concerts today. Since then the festival has grown steadily.

Princess Marie has been the festival's patron since 2009 .
