Presidential election in Venezuela 2012

The president shank choice in Venezuela took place on 7 October 2012 Design.

Incumbent Hugo Chávez ( PSUV ), who ran for the Gran Polo Patriótico (GPP) alliance , was re-elected with a clear majority of 55.13 percent, although this was lower than in the previous elections. The runner-up Henrique Capriles ( Primero Justicia ), supported by the broad opposition alliance Mesa de la Unidad Democrática , got 44.25%. The remaining four candidates didn't matter.

Mesa de la Unidad

The Mesa de la Unidad organized a primary election on February 12, 2012 to determine its candidate. All Venezuelans entered in the electoral register could vote. Henrique Capriles clearly prevailed in this election with 64 percent of the votes cast against María Corina Machado , Pablo Pérez Álvarez , Diego Arria and Pablo Medina.

History and polls

2011

The Minister of Information, Andrés Izarra, stated on December 12, 2011 that Chávez had 55.5% and 49% "popularity" respectively, according to the Ivad and Hinterlaces polls . Both companies said poll numbers rose for Hugo Chavez Frías after he announced that he had beaten his cancer.

Since December there have been several debates between the opposition candidates. They agreed to go to a primary election on February 12, 2012 to determine a single candidate against Chavez.

January

On January 25, 2012, Leopoldo López withdrew his candidacy. The next day he announced that he would support Capriles.

February

The primaries for the opposition candidate, in which all voters were allowed to participate, took place on February 12th. Capriles won the candidacy with around 60% of the vote (with over three million participants). On February 16, Hugo Chavez addressed Capriles through the media and said: The more you disguise yourself, the more often you will see me every day. You will not be able to prevent the confrontation with Chavez, that is the confrontation with the fatherland, with national dignity . According to the polling institute Datanálisis, Capriles expected 63% of the votes for the area code on February 3rd. On February 12, Capriles was elected opposition candidate with 64.2% of the vote in open primaries.

March

During a demonstration for Henrique Capriles, his team was attacked by PSUV supporters and one man was injured. The attackers stole the cameras of the Globovisión journalists. PSUV politician Diosdado Cabello said during a demonstration in Trujillo state that Chávez was the only one who could guarantee peace. He said: " Those who want a fatherland go with Chavez. The traitors should go with the others. " According to Diosdado, if the opposition won, they would 'take the measures of the International Monetary Fund'.

On March 14, during a demonstration in Apure state , Chavez's brother Adán Chavez declared that PSUV members are ready to die if necessary. Diosdado Cabello stated that the choice between dying and defeating will be PSUV members win . Hugo Chavez, who announced in mid-2011 that he had cancer, returned from Cuba on March 16, where he had been operated on again. Hugo Chávez has expressly rejected a debate with Capriles. He said he would be ashamed of debating a "mischief" and would rather face a heavyweight.

July

On July 5, the leader of the Guardia Nacional Capriles announced that he was not allowed to begin his performance in the municipality of Zamora in the state of Barinas. On July 7, the national police prevented an opposition demonstration in La Vega, West Caracas, which had been announced for days, which led to protests by the opposition.

August

On August 5th, Chavez appeared in Miguel Peña , South Valencia. There he declared that the military Francisco Ameliach would be the PSUV's candidate for the governor of Carabobo state . After supporters called for a better choice of Puerto Cabello's mayor , Rafael Lacava, Chavez said:

The opposition in Carabobo then declared that Chavez already knew that he had lost Carabobo.

On August 12th, Chavez visited the western state of Táchira. There he said that his party had lost the gubernatorial election in 2008 because of internal rivalries. 'That means treason against the people, treason against the revolution and therefore betrayal against Chavez' On the same day, Capriles visited Caicara del Orinoco on the southern bank of the Orinoco. The opposition had complained that the governor of the state of Bolívar, where Caicara is, had unceremoniously closed the airport in this small town to prevent Capriles from landing there. In the end, Capriles came by boat.

On August 24, polling firm Colsultores 21 stated that 47.7% of the voters were for Capriles and 45.9% for Chavez. Surveys in the same month by the institutes GIS XXI, Datanálisis and Hinterlaces saw the incumbent in the lead.

September

In late September, two opposition activists were killed in Barinas when Chavez supporters blocked their way during a political rally and they got out of their cars.
