Disruptive influences on the earth's orbit and rotation without UTC correction would mean that after 90 years the earth would only be at the point of a complete annual orbit of the sun with a delay of 60 s .

- London / United Kingdom : On learning of the years of manipulating the reference rates Libor and Euribor the CEO of kick Barclays - banking Bob Diamond and COO Jerry del Missier with immediate effect. On the previous day, Marcus Agius announced his retirement from the head of the board of directors.
- Munich / Germany : The university library of the Ludwig Maximilians University announces the discovery of a rare globe segment map by Martin Waldseemüller from 1507.

- Geneva / Switzerland : Scientists from the European nuclear research center CERN announce the discovery of a new elementary particle , which could be the Higgs boson . The last elementary particle predicted in the Standard Model of particle physics would then be experimentally proven.
- São Paulo / Brazil : Corinthians São Paulo wins the Copa Libertadores for the first time with a 2-0 win in the second leg against the Argentinian soccer club CA Boca Juniors .
- Strasbourg / France : The European Parliament rejects the controversial international trade agreement ACTA , which aims to combat counterfeiting and internet piracy , among other things, with a large majority.

- Buenos Aires / Argentina : Jorge Rafael Videla , Reynaldo Bignone and four other high-ranking officers of the military dictatorship (1976–1983) are sentenced to several years' imprisonment for the child abduction of imprisoned opponents of the regime .
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : 160 German economists publish a call to prevent a banking union in the German newspaper FAZ .
- Kourou / French Guiana : With MSG-3 , one of the hitherto most modern weather satellites in the world will be brought into space by the Ariane 5 launcher .
- London / United Kingdom : The Shard , Europe's tallest skyscraper, is inaugurated.
- London / United Kingdom : The diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II is celebrated according to the ideas of her son Charles , who organizes a court parade at Buckingham Palace and a boat parade on the Thames .
- Milan / Italy : Italian experts announce that they have discovered around a hundred early drawings and paintings that they attribute to Caravaggio in a collection of works by students of the painter Simone Peterzano in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan . Caravaggio is said to have made them when he took lessons from Peterzano between 1584 and 1588.
- Paris / France : The final report on the investigation into the accident of Air France Flight 447 , which crashed in 2009 , is published.
- Reykjavík / Iceland : Under the title " Syria Files ", the platform WikiLeaks begins to publish more than two million e-mails from Syrian politicians, ministries and companies on the Internet.

- Stuttgart / Germany : The Stuttgart Higher Regional Court finds the former RAF terrorist Verena Becker guilty of complicity in the assassination attempt on Federal Prosecutor General Siegfried Buback and two of his companions in 1977.
- Zurich / Switzerland : FIFA allows goal-line technology that should counteract wrong decisions in the future. The technique should not be confused with the video evidence.
