Marcus Agius (born July 22, 1946 ) is a British banker.

Life

Agius studied economics at Trinity Hall , University of Cambridge at Cambridge and then at Harvard Business School . From 1972 to 2006 he worked for the US investment bank Lazard . From 2006 to 2012, Agius was chairman of the major British bank Barclays .

Due to the LIBOR manipulation scandal , Agius announced his withdrawal from the company on July 2, 2012 as head of the Barclays board of directors. He also resigned as chairman of the board of directors of the British Bankers' Association (BBA), which is responsible for determining the LIBOR interbank rate through a survey of major banks. Agius' resignation increased pressure on Barclays CEO Bob Diamond . A day later, Bob Diamond and Chief Operating Officer Jerry del Missier resigned from their posts with immediate effect.

Agius was director of the British broadcaster BBC executive board and one of the three trustees on the steering committee of the Bilderberg group .

Agius is married to Katherine Juliette (* 1949), the eldest daughter of Edmund de Rothschild from the English banking family, and has two children.
