Unguja is the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago , a Tanzanian island area that lies off the East African mainland coast of Tanzania. The island of Unguja is or was previously called Zanzibar .
geography
Unguja is about 83 km long and up to 37 km wide. There are numerous smaller side islands off the west coast , of which Tumbatu is the largest. Unguja is separated from the mainland by the approximately 30 to 40 km wide Zanzibar Channel .
At the 2012 census there were 896,721 inhabitants on Unguja. Zanzibar City , the capital of the island and the capital of the Tanzanian state of Zanzibar , is located on the west coast of Unguja. Other locations include Bububu , Chwaka , Koani , Makunduchi , Mkokotoni, and Nungwi .

The international airport of Zanzibar Kisauni Airport is also located in the west of Unguja.
