Scientific name
Nausithoidae
Bigelow , 1913

The Nausithoidae are a family of the umbrella jellyfish (Scyphozoa). About 26 species are currently known, most of which live in deeper waters.

features

The family includes both metagenetic genera and a genus that only (still) forms a polyp stage . The polyps sit in slender peridermal tubes made of chitin and can produce ephyral larvae through strobilation , which further develop into medusae , but also planuloids (or planulal larvae -like structures), which only grow back into polyps. The medusa have eight rhopals , eight tentacles , 16 marginal lobes and 16 radial gastric pouches . The medusas are usually relatively small (9–35 mm).

Geographical occurrence

The types of the family are common worldwide. Most species occur at greater depths. Nausithoë werneri Jarms, 1990, comes e.g. B. at depths of 200 to 3000 m. In contrast, Thecoscyphus zibrowii has only been found in underwater caves at a depth of 5 and 15 m.

Systematics

Currently, three genera are assigned to the Nausithoidae family:

According to the first molecular genetic investigations, the Nausithoidae are probably polyphyletic .
