Development stages of umbrella jellyfish ( 11 : Ephyra)

The ephyral larva is a larval form of the umbrella jellyfish (Scyphozoa) and of many hydrozoans (Hydrozoa).

The ephyra arises in the polyp generation in the course of the generation change vegetatively through strobilation (transverse constriction) of a sessile scyphopolyp. After its detachment, it swims with the help of eight long trunk lobes, which curl up into two wing lobes. A rhopalium sits between these wing lobes .

Later, new lobes (velar flaps) sprout between the edge flaps , which then merge with the edge flaps so that a closed Medusa umbrella is formed.

Eight larger, pocket-shaped protuberances extend from the stomach into the marginal lobes, while smaller protuberances protrude adradially towards the velar lobes.
