Tumbatu is one of the northwest coast of the island of Zanzibar (Unguja) 6 km offshore island of Tanzania . It is located around 40 km off the coast of East Africa and is surrounded by a dense fringing reef .
geography
The elongated island is sparsely populated in the coastal regions. Gomani , the main town on the island, is on the east coast; other places of settlement can be found on the south-east and south coast. The densely forested western and northern parts of the island are hardly populated.
There is an automatic beacon on a small uninhabited side island off the northern tip of Tumbatu .

Two of the 28 wards of the Unguja Kaskazini 'A' district of the Tanzanian region of Unguja Kaskazini are located on Tumbatu , namely Gomani in the north (island capital. 6813 inhabitants) and Jongowe in the south (2667 inhabitants, both 2002).
