Walter Hofmann (born November 4, 1925 in Zittau ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Walter Hofmann studied Classical Philology and Ancient History at the University of Leipzig after his deployment in World War II . In 1954 he was at Franz Dornseiff with the dissertation the gods, their functions and epithets at Hesiod and Homer doctorate . His habilitation took place in Leipzig in 1964. In 1974 he was appointed associate professor for classical philology. In 1990 he retired.

Walter Hofmann and Jürgen Werner were the only representatives of classical philology at the University of Leipzig until 1990. He was mainly concerned with Latin poetry, especially with the comedies of Plautus and the epigrams of Martial . From 1963 to 1970 he was co-editor of the Greek series of the Library of Antiquity , of which he was a member of the scientific advisory board until 1990. He has published translations of various Plautus comedies in Reclam's Universal Library , including Miles Gloriosus (1965), Amphitruo, Aulularia, Mostellaria (1971) and Menaechmi (1977).
