Bawe (also Bawi , Baui , formerly Telegraph Island) is a small island in the Zanzibar Archipelago ( Tanzania ) in the Indian Ocean. The elongated island extends from northeast to southwest over a length of 1 kilometer, at its widest point it measures a good 500 meters. Bawe is about 5.8 kilometers from Zanzibar City on the west coast of Unguja . There is a privately owned, high-class hotel on the island . The waters around the island are suitable for diving.

history

In colonial times at the end of the 19th century, Bawe was also known as "Telegraph Island". Telegraph cables coming in from different directions ended here. The telegraph company owned a small stone house there that could be used as a telegraph station in an emergency.
