Changuu (also Kibandiko or Prison Island ) is a small island in the Indic of the Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania . Its name comes from the Swahili and is the name of a fish that you encountered there.

The island is oval and stretches from northwest to southeast over a length of 800 m, at the widest point it measures 230 m. Changuu is 5.6 km from Zanzibar City and 5.1 km from Bububu on the west coast of Unguja . The coordinates are: 6 ° 7'9.29 "S 39 ° 10'1.07" E.

history

Changuu was used as a prison island by its owners, two Arab slave traders who had given it as a gift from Zanzibar's first sultan, Majid bin Said (1834–1870), where they punished some of their slaves before taking them to the slave market in Stone Town sold. After Changuu was briefly used as a coral mine, British Governor Lloyd Mathews bought the island in 1893 to build a prison for violent criminals from the mainland. Instead, one was in prison but quarantine station for yellow fever set up as Stone Town threatened an epidemic that would have on all of East Africa can spill over. Since most of the ships came in the summer and no new sick people were brought in in the winter, it was a popular place to relax even then. For this purpose, fresh water tanks were created and pits were flooded from coral mining for swimming pools. In 1919, Changuu received its most famous residents, namely four Aldabra giant tortoises , from the governor . The turtles reproduced and increased in numbers, but the theft of the animals reduced their numbers despite new imports. In 1931 a new quarantine complex was built for 904 sick people. In the meantime, the operation of the infirmary has been stopped, and there is currently a hotel and holiday apartments on the island.
