Bububu is a small town on the East African island of Unguja in Tanzania . The village is located about eight kilometers north of the island's capital Zanzibar City (also called Stone Town) on the west coast of the island and is therefore considered a suburb of the island's capital. To the east of Bububus are the Bububu Springs in the Masingini Forest . The city is mostly a densely populated industrial city, but it is also known for its beach, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the vicinity of the capital. There are numerous hotels in or near Bububus. For 2011, around 48,000 inhabitants are named for Bububu. According to other sources, the city had only 13,127 inhabitants in 2002. Bububu belongs to the Tanzanian region of Unguja Mjini Magharibi , one of three regions that are on the island of Unguja. The border with the Unguja Kaskazini region runs just 2.5 kilometers north of the center of Bububus and the border with the Unguja Kusini region is less than seven kilometers to the east. There are numerous cinnamon tree plantations in the vicinity of Bububus.

Origin of the name Bububu

On this historical map of Zanzibar, Bububu (see red marking) does not yet exist, but Mtoni to the south and Bet el Ras to the north.

The place Bububu and the name for it is of a more recent origin. The place is not yet found on old maps of Zanzibar from the late 19th century. Gradually by Bububu, a railway line was built in 1905 that connected the area with Zanzibar City. Bububu simply refers to the sound of the steam locomotive passing by. The name is in Kiswahili next to "stesheni" the word for "train station".

Economy, transport and education

Bububu has numerous vendors and small shops selling fruit, fresh fish and cashew nuts. There is a regular bus connection to the island's capital. In 1905 a steam tram had been opened, which probably ceased operations in 1930. The Malawi Road, a main road on the east coast of the island that connects Zanzibar City with Mkokotoni on the northern tip of the island, runs through Bububu . Otherwise, Bububu has numerous hotels, guesthouses and lodges and advertises holidays on the coral beach , Bububu Beach .

The Bububu Secondary School is located in Bububu. Due to the large number of students, there is a morning class (lessons from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and an afternoon class (lessons from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.). Bububu also has a kindergarten currently attended by 50 children between the ages of four and six.
