Mkokotoni is a city in Tanzania on the island of Unguja . The small town is located in the semi-autonomous Zanzibar and is the administrative center of the Kaskazini A district .

geography

Mkokotoni is located on the northwest coast of Unguja. The small island of Tumbatu is located one kilometer off the coast .

The climate in the city is tropical, Am according to the effective climate classification . There is precipitation in all months, the lowest in February at 50 millimeters. In April and May it rains more than 300 millimeters each. The average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, with the coolest in August and the hottest in February.

history

In 1984, Chinese and Arabic coins from the 11th to the 14th centuries were found, which indicate a lively trade relationship during this period.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There is a pre-school and a primary school in the city, where 750 students are taught by 22 teachers (as of 2016).
  • Health: There is a health center for the medical care of the population. In 2015, one of 78 people tested was HIV positive; in 2016, all 184 people tested were negative.
  • Water: In 2017 around a quarter of the houses had a connection to the water supply.
  • Electricity: Almost a quarter of households are connected to the electricity grid (as of 2015).

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Fishing: There is a fishing center in Mkokotoni, where 400 fishermen catch around 100 tons of fish every year.
  • Trade: The over one hundred registered traders sell vegetables and spices in addition to fish.
