Chumbe is a privately owned island off Zanzibar , best known for its ecological economy and coral reefs. The only 0.25 km² large island is about seven kilometers from Unguja . The island was a restricted military area, so its original fauna and flora could be preserved.

In 1994 the island and the surrounding coral reef was declared a national park and has since been operated by Chumbe Island Coral Park, Ltd. (CHICOP) managed. This non-profit organization promotes marine research and a limited ecotourism on Chumbe. In 2000, CHICOP won a Global 500 Award for its exemplary, sustainable park management.

In the reef off Chumbe there are over 200 different types of hard coral .
