Milan Uherek

Milan Uherek (born December 23, 1925 in Bzenec , Czechoslovakia ; † August 9, 2012 in Nová Paka ) was a Czech choir director, music teacher and composer.

Career

Uherek studied music, philosophy and Czech literature at Masaryk University as well as composition (with Vilém Petrželka ), choral conducting (with Vilém Steinman ) and piano at the Janáček Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Brno . From 1953 he was director and choirmaster at the Opera of the North Bohemian Theater in Liberec . With his wife Jiřina Uherková he founded the Severáček Children's Choir in 1958 , which he directed until 1998. The choir became one of the most important school choirs in the Czech Republic. a. in most European countries, the USA, Syria and Jordan, successful performances. Uherek enriched the literature for children's choirs with many original compositions and arrangements that he wrote for his choir, including the song cycles Vrabčí písničky , Hrátky se zvířátky , Od jara do zimy and Jarní trojlístek . In 1998 he was awarded the František Lýsek Prize , and in 2001 the Prize of the Czech Ministry of Culture.
