from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albrecht Greiner-Mai (born April 8, 1932 in Lauscha ; † March 11, 2012 there ) was a German art glass blower, glass designer and glass artist.

Albrecht Greiner-Mai learned how to work with glass in elementary school and in his father's workshop. After teaching with Paul Knabner, the master craftsman's examination, state recognition as an artisan and the study at the technical school for applied arts in Schneeberg with the degree as a glass designer and admission to the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR followed . On the way to becoming a glass artist, he was influenced by artists such as Alfred Böhm , sculptor and Bauhaus student, and Ernst Precht, painter and glass artist, through the glass art interest group , particularly in the further development of animal glass sculptures and their creative abstraction, as well as by his mentor Prof. Horst Michel . The vessels and objects manufactured by Greiner-Mai show typical forms of expression that are unique to him. The vessels made by Greiner-Mai using thread and mesh glass as well as mosaic technology are unmistakable despite their differentiation in form and decoration. Albrecht Greiner-Mai was awarded the GDR National Prize.

The Lauscha Museum of Glass Art honored Albrecht Greiner-Mai's life's work in 2007 on the occasion of his 75th birthday with a special exhibition.
