Frauenberger was one of the best friends of the Tyrolean mountaineer Hermann Buhl , with whom he took part in the German-Austrian Willy Merkl memorial expedition to Nanga Parbat , during which Buhl made the first ascent on July 3, 1953. Frauenberger had accompanied Buhl to Camp V, but then renounced a summit victory due to lack of space in the camp and withdrew to Camp IV. Hans Ertl made the documentary Nanga Parbat about this expedition .

On October 24, 1953, Buhl and Frauenberger reported on their expedition in the sold-out Salzburg Festival Hall ; the lecture had to be repeated due to great demand.

Walter Frauenberger died tragically in 1958 when he fell out of the window of an inn during an overnight stay in Gmunden and succumbed to serious head injuries that night. The exact course of the accident remained a mystery, but he was likely to have opened the window of his room after he had previously complained of nausea as a result of a nervous condition and leaned out too far.

Frauenberger was buried on February 13, 1958 in the St. Johann cemetery. He left behind his wife Betty and three children; Ute, Werner and Walter.
