Karl-Hans Arndt

Karl-Hans Arndt (born December 19, 1935 in Wittenberg ; † July 25, 2012 in Erfurt ) was a German doctor , surgeon and sports medicine specialist .

Education and career

From 1956 Arndt completed his medical studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Medical Academy in Erfurt , which he graduated with a state examination in 1962. In the same year he was awarded the title magna cum laude for his dissertation The history of the plague in Erfurt since the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War (1625–1739) . med. PhD .

After completing his training as a surgical specialist and working in trauma surgery at the Medical Academy in Erfurt, he completed an external course of study at the German University of Physical Culture in Leipzig in 1969 as a qualified sports teacher. The acquisition of the specialist in sports medicine followed in 1971. In 1973 he acquired the doctorate B ( habilitation ) with the habilitation thesis Investigations on the problem of subcutaneous Achilles tendon ruptures under traumatological and sports practical aspects .

From 1968 to 1990 Arndt worked in the Erfurt Sports Medical Service as a district sports doctor and head of the popular sports department. Sports medicine teaching assignments were held at various colleges and universities throughout. Arndt was always non-party and not a travel cadre . He was denied an academic career in the GDR. An appointment as associate professor at the Medical Academy Erfurt did not take place until 1986, as honorary professor at the University of Erfurt in 1997 .

After the reunification of Germany and the acquisition of specialist in Public Health Arndt was until 2002 as a medical officer working and director of the health department of the state capital Erfurt.

Arndt was married to the doctor Christel Arndt, the marriage resulted in a daughter.

Sports and sports medicine activities

In total, more than 500 regional, central and international sporting events were organized and supervised by sports doctors, which was reflected in corresponding publications. Arndt was a member of the doctors' commissions of the wrestling association and the gymnastics association of the GDR. In the triathlon federation of the GDR founded in 1990, he acted as an association doctor. After being elected General Secretary of the Society for Sports Medicine of the GDR in 1981, Arndt held this position on an honorary basis until 1990.

In October 1990, at the 32nd German Sports Medical Congress in Munich, he announced that the state sports medical associations of the new federal states would join the German Sports Medical Association . He headed the Thuringian Sports Medical Association, founded in May 1990, as 1st chairman until 2004. An active triathlete since 1985, he was also President of the Thuringian Triathlon Association from 1990 to 2000.

Before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall , Arndt organized and led a large number of sports medicine training events, conferences and congresses, including the Thuringian Runners' Meeting (1979–1998), the Sports Medicine Association Symposium yesterday - today - tomorrow 1992 in Oberhof and the 37th German Sports Medical Congress 2001 in Rotenburg / Fulda . He was a member of the scientific advisory board of the German magazine for sports medicine.

In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the German Society for Sports Medicine in autumn 2012 in Berlin, Arndt played a key role in designing the commemorative publication. His lecture there should be a highlight of the congress.

Arndt published around 250 essays on sports traumatology, sports medicine and medical history, including eight books and monographs, among others:
