The Thuringian runners' meeting , first held in 1979 at the Medical Academy Erfurt , were joint advanced training events for sports doctors, sports educators and endurance athletes on current problems in endurance sports. The organizers were the Thuringian district groups of the Society for Sports Medicine of the GDR and from 1990 the Thuringian Sports Medical Association.

These conferences were each combined with an endurance run event and took place in various cities in Thuringia until 1998, for example in Erfurt , Jena (called Thuringian Runner's Day there), Weimar and Arnstadt . Well-known sports medicine specialists, sports scientists and successful athletes appeared as speakers .

As a main theme of the 7th Thuringian runners meeting in 1986 in Erfurt was the first time in the GDR endurance triathlon ( Triathlon ) scientifically discussed.
